During my time working as a freelance designer, I have experienced the ups and downs that come with the territory. Designing is what I am best at so I try to give 100% every day. Being optimistic is definitely an asset that has helped me with this since, just like any job, it has its times of doubt and frustration.
When I think of “freelance,” the first word that comes to mind is, “discipline.” Because freelancers are technically their own employers, discipline is key. For me, I get the flexibility to work from home while doing what I love for an amazing agency. Sounds great, huh? While working from home sounds like a dream, it takes a lot of discipline to be productive without being distracted by the TV, roommates, etc. If you are able to remain disciplined and get your work done from home, then it can be very rewarding.
Being self-employed also means having the resolve to pay your own taxes. In my experience this takes the most discipline because you have to put tax money aside instead of having it taken out of your paycheck automatically. Also a freelancer’s paycheck isn’t consistent. This can be tricky to plan for, but an upside is the ability to make good money when you have a lot of projects to complete. All of this has taught me a lot about money and saving which I know will benefit me in the future.
Overall, I have loved working as a freelance designer. Having a job that allows me to think creatively and earn money doing what I love to do has been awesome. Whether I’m graphic designing, web designing or video editing. I have also found I am much more productive and creative when I’m excited about a project and keep a positive attitude. I have been blessed to work for and alongside some great people in the process. Working with people who value your work and understand your goals has made for a rewarding career experience. My plan is to continue making the most of it.
